Young Shrike on a Snag

A brown shrike (a scaly-breasted youngster) perches atop a weathered dead branch, framed against deep green. Small and sweet-looking — but with a fearsome reputation. Fun fact: Shrikes are nicknamed "butcher birds" because they impale prey — insects, lizards, even small birds — on thorns and barbed wire, creating a larder they return to later.
