The Lapwing's Wattle

A red-wattled lapwing stands on wet ground, its bold black-white-brown plumage set off by a scarlet facial wattle and bright yellow legs. Striking and unmistakable. Fun fact: This lapwing is famous for its loud "did-he-do-it?" call, given day and night — and it nests right on the open ground, defending its eggs by dive-bombing anything that comes too close, cattle and humans included.
